Yoga and the 4 Stages of Healing
Online Workshop Series via Zoom

You’ve lost something. You’ve lost your vitality. Maybe it slipped away overnight. Or maybe it seeped out of you so slowly that it’s hard to remember what feeling good feels like. Sometimes the body needs to rest. And illness is one of the ways that can happen.

At some point in our lives, many of us will experience a serious health event. This may be physical, mental, or spiritual or a combination. However, illness is not the only way. Loss of any kind can bring us into a state of disequilibrium. Loss of any kind can bring us to a turning point in our lives.

Often these events are brought on by stress or eventually cause stress related health challenges including depression, indigestion, inflammation, insomnia, weakened immune system and so on. The body is an amazingly resilient colony of organisms whose sole purpose is to return all systems to balance. Sometimes the systems of the body have been challenged so long and so hard that deep work is required to assist the process.

The 4 Stages of Healing is a process. Start where you are. Each week you will receive guidance and inspiration to move forward on your path to increased vitality and enthusiasm for living.

You will be guided through your readiness to make the changes necessary to live your life fully. You will be guided through individual stages of healing using tools and practices from the yoga tradition. Each week will include a combination of tools and practice with education and self-inquiry tailored to where you are right now.

4 Stages of Healing

What are the 4 Stages of Healing

Stability - the first stage of healing

If you’ve been rocked by a crisis – health, financial, relationship, spiritual – creating stability is the starting point for rebooting your systems. And that usually means rest. Rather than doing more and pushing through, rest is needed. Why? Often a health crisis – physical, mental, emotional – is the body’s answer to chronic stress. There’s only so much that the body can take. So, rest is the first stage. And rest can come in many forms.

Clarity - the third stage of healing

Ah, clarity. When we feel better, we think better. More seems possible. We develop an expansive view of our world. Often this also means that we have more joy in our lives. We feel stronger. Perhaps we feel better than we have in a long time. In this stage of healing, we feel free to pursue our goals. Fear doesn’t drag us down. Even if you are still dealing with a chronic illness or ongoing situation, you feel strong enough to weather the challenges and live a good life.

Vitality - the second stage of healing

Loss of vitality is a sure sign the something is wrong. Loss of energy. Loss of enthusiasm. All of these point to a body-mind in need of self-care and tender regard. After all, this body is our vehicle for traveling through this life. Optimal health and vitality allow us to live the life we want and do the things that give our lives meaning. So, restoration is the second stage of healing. This is a healing continuum. It’s less like a straight line and more like a wandering or spiraling path. Within our yoga practice there are many ways to increase vitality without overwhelming an already challenged system.

Harmony - the fourth stage of healing

Harmony feels good. Life is good. At this stage we are able to step back and not only see the big picture but embrace the journey that’s brought us to this moment. At this stage we are able and desirous of be of service to others. We become committed to our spiritual path. We look for opportunities to be in service to others, whether it’s everyday kindnesses or joining an important cause. Why? Because we feel good again. We may even feel whole for the first time in a long time. I want to stress that this is possible even if the body is still experiencing health issues.
