Learn how to safely offer chair yoga classes or modifications using a chair: for students who need to use a chair for balance and safety; for students who are recovering from illness or injury; for students who need alternatives to getting onto the floor or who need help getting up from the floor; for large groups including workplace seminars and conferences.

Chair yoga offers movement options for every day situations such as working at your desk, long trips in a car or airplane. Chair yoga need not be “easy” either.

Chair yoga teaches proper alignment that can be helpful to anyone who practices yoga.  This program includes hands on practices as well as PPT presentations on health conditions such as osteoporosis, joint conditions and joint replacements.

This experiential training focuses on the levels of Chair Yoga:

·Level 1 Chair Yoga – seated poses using one or two chairs.

·Level 2 Chair Yoga – seated and standing poses using one or two chairs.

·Level 3 Chair Yoga – modifications for mat postures as well as standing poses using the chair for balance, support, and improved alignment. Level 3 Chair Yoga can be used in regular yoga classes to practice challenging poses such as Balancing Half Moon.

·Techniques include:

o   Range of Movement techniques for “Daily Joint Maintenance”

o   Chair Sun Salutation – Seated and Standing

o   Restorative poses using the chair

o   Safe movement for osteoporosis, joint and spinal conditions

o   Mudras for balanced well-being

  • Teaching Methodology:
    • Discussions include teaching safe and accessible yoga for students with a variety of conditions and life experience.

Attendance live to weekend sessions is required for Yoga Alliance certification.

*Plus recorded classes provided or live-streamed online class at 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday, 4/11/24
*Note: The assignment includes experiencing at least 1 class either live streamed from the Thursday class on Zoom or a choice of 6 recorded classes with Susanne or founder Karen O’Donnell Clarke. Assignments must be completed by Saturday, April 20, 2024 for certification.

Preparation:
Take some of the free recorded classes or Live-Stream classes to decide if the Yoga Heals Us approach is right for you.
Props:
  • 2 chairs that are suitable for Chair Yoga. Folding chairs can be versatile. Flat seated wooden chairs such as kitchen chairs work well too.  It’s good to have at least one chair with no arms.
  • 2 blocks
  • 1 strap
  • Blanket, pillow, eye pillow (optional), yoga mat or carpeted space.
  • A bolster is nice to have. We can also improvise if you don’t have one.
  • Dowel or broom stick
  • Pool noodle, rolled towel, or rolled sticky mat.
Desktop or laptop computer is best. There will be powerpoint presentations and small / large group activities that will make viewing easier on a larger screen than a cell phone.

  • Yoga teachers in training with Yoga Alliance registered 200 hr YTT may request to apply.
  • Health care professionals who meet the prerequisite (a regular yoga practice with a certified yoga teacher) may request to take this program and will receive a Continuing Education Certificate.

Yoga Heals Us

Karen O’Donnell Clarke, certified yoga therapist, developed this training from her 20+ years of working with students who have multiple sclerosis, cancer, recovering from surgery, seniors, and individuals with physical challenges needing a gentle, adaptive approach to yoga. 

Susanne Murtha, certified yoga therapist assisted and co-lead with Karen and is committed to continue her legacy. Susanne has taught yoga for over 20 years with advanced certifications in yoga, yoga therapy, Ayurveda and iRest meditation. She has worked with people managing chronic pain for the past 7 years.

  • 14 days or more prior to the first day of the training:
    • You will receive a refund minus a $75 processing fee.
  • 13 days through 1 days prior to the first day of the training:
    • You will receive 75% of your payment minus a $75 processing fee.
  • No refund is available:
    • if you cancel on the first day of the training.
    • if you are a ‘no show’ or if you leave the training early for any reason.
