Class Descriptions

Many people become interested in yoga as a way to become flexible, reduce stress and experience a sense of peace. Yoga is highly adaptable allowing students to move in ways that accommodate aches, pains and limitations. The regular practice of yoga can increase strength and flexibility, lower blood pressure, quiet the mind, improve concentration, and cultivate a sense of well-being. Our yoga classes offer a comprehensive yoga program that includes yoga philosophy, breathing techniques, yoga exercise known as asana, concentration and meditation techniques and deep relaxation integrating body, mind and spirit. 


Chair Yoga for Every Body

Are you interested in Yoga but not interested in getting onto the floor? Then this class is for you! Every body can do Yoga using chairs for sitting and standing: individuals who need to support for balance and safety; individuals recovering from illness or injury or have problems with knees and hips; or for anyone interested in learning more ways to improve balance, strength, and flexibility. This fun class offers a balanced approach for strength and flexibility, breath work and meditation. And we do serious work, always adapted to the needs of each person.  Adults – all ages, levels and abilities welcome.


Chair Yoga for Seniors
This is a fun class that explores the needs and sensitivities of seniors including breath work and exercises that increase range of movement, strength and flexibility. Seniors who have taken this class report that they can walk further, reach higher and sleep better – and have fun doing it!


Gentle Kripalu Yoga 
For all levels, especially beginners. Enjoy the calm, peace, and self-acceptance of yoga no matter what shape you’re in. Karen’s gentle approach infuses her classes with humor, humility and warmth as she invites you to go at your own pace using props and modifications that provide an accessible yoga experience for every body.


Mat Yoga for Seniors
This gentle class includes traditional yoga postures that start sitting on the floor, transition to hands and knees, then standing poses, then hands and knees again onto the belly, ending on the back for deep relaxation. Modifications are given for students who have problems with knees, hips, wrist, shoulders and back. Pranayama, meditation and yoga philosophy round out the class. 


Moderate Kripalu Yoga 
This flow style class is done at a moderate pace including longer holding and posture explorations focusing on proper alignment and movement coordinated with breath. This class is designed for students who enjoy a sometimes challenging yoga class. Modifications are given as needed to ensure the postures are done safely. Students who are new to yoga are recommended to take the Gentle class first. 


Yoga Basics
For all levels, beginners and experienced students. Cultivate an internal, meditative experience while stretching and challenging the body. Practice includes a variety of foundational postures (standing, seated and on the floor) that focus on balanced alignment. Breathing techniques, yoga philosophy, meditation and deep relaxation are woven into each class. Individual attention and modifications are given as much as possible within the class situation. Modifications are offered for both ends of the spectrum, beginners and more experienced students. Classes are geared toward the majority of the students’ ability in the class at the time. Students who have a specific physical limitation or injury may need to attend the Gentle class first. 


Therapeutic Yoga for Backs & Hips 
This series addresses postural alignment, core strength, muscular tension and techniques to relieve stress. Techniques include gentle stretching using the breath to relieve tension and somatic movements to rewrite the neuro-muscular patterns that contribute to chronic pain, deep relaxation and mindfulness practices that can be integrated into daily life. This isn’t a substitute for medical care.


·       Please register for the class and location that you will attend most often. The makeup policy was designed to help you stay committed to taking care of your health and well-being by giving you the flexibility to make up classes at multiple locations, days and times. If you find that you are making up more classes than you are attending, please sign up for the class that you actually go to. If the class that you transfer into costs more due to residency or location you will be charged the difference.

·       Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment may be canceled.

·       Late enrollment is prorated. This means that if you join the class after the session has started, you don’t pay for the classes you have already missed. You do pay for the remaining classes in the session. Classes that are missed during the session, for any reason, can be made up in accordance with the Make-Up policy.

Refunds / Make-ups:

·       Students must call me when classes are missed in order to make up these classes.

·       Missed classes are non-refundable and must be made up within the same session dates.

·       Make up classes may be used to attend classes other than the one that you regularly attend.  For example, if you regularly attend on Monday at 5, you may make up your missed class on Tuesday at 5.

·       Make up classes have no cash value and cannot be used toward payment of any class.

·       Evening and Park & Rec. classes may be made up at other evening or Park & Rec. classes.  Applies only to those classes taught by Karen.
Some classes may be full. When in doubt, call ahead.

·       Guest pass:  You may give one make up per session to a friend to try the class.  Make-ups cannot be given to current students.


·       Ledyard Parks & Recreation classes will be canceled when Ledyard Schools are closed due to weather. These classes will be made up at the end of the session when at all possible.  Check TV Channel 3 or Chanel 8 and

      Exception:  Classes held at the Gales Ferry Community Center may still be held.  Students in these classes will the contacted by email or phone call when classes are cancelled unless the Ledyard Town Hall is closed due to weather.  As always, when you miss a class that hasn’t been cancelled you have the option to make-up in accordance with the Make-up Policy.

·       Ledyard Senior Center classes will be cancelled when the Ledyard Town Hall is closed due to weather.  Cancellations will be announced on TV Channel 3 and 8.

·       Montville Senior Center classes will be canceled when Montville Schools are closed due to weather. 

·       Classes at St. James Church will be canceled at my discretion.

·       I will attempt to contact students who are registered for the affected classes and I will post a message on Facebook at

·       When in doubt, email, call or text me at 860.204.0797 or miss the class at your discretion and make it up.

·       Classes that are canceled will be made up or given a credit at the end of the session.
